When we describe a product as sublimated, we are referring to a process by which dyes are applied to the fabric. The dye-sublimation printing process uses heat to transfer dye onto the fabric and because the dyes bond very well with polyester it is possible to print bright, well-defined images.
Sublimation printing transfers the dyes onto the fabric at a molecular level, essentially meaning the ink and the fabric are now one indistinguishable item, rather than the dye sitting on the fabric to simply wash off. This process results in a completely permanent, incredibly vibrant printed synthetic fabric.
So how does sublimation work? Well, sublimation printing uses heat to essentially bring ink and fabric together as one.
First, a design is printed onto special paper. The inks that are used turn into gas when brought under heat, then combine with the fabric and permanently print onto the fabric. The effects are permanent and less prone to fading, as the ink is embedded in the fabric or substrate rather than simply laying on top like a normal print.
The process is almost like a tattoo, but instead of for your skin, it’s for your chosen product. The heat opens up the pores of the fabric, then with the applied pressure the ink cools and returns to a solid form.
The result is a permanent, full color image that won’t crack, peel or wash away. The process allows the ink to go from a solid to a gas without turning to liquid, a bit like dry ice. The conversion is initiated by heat and controlled by pressure.
Why Choose Sublimation Over Screen Printing?
First, the colors are much more vibrant, and images can be reproduced with an unprecedented sharpness; you can take an original digital photograph and make it your jersey design without missing a detail. Second, sublimation is a dying process, so the ink is fully integrated into the fabric, not printed on top like screen printing. To simplify the idea of sublimation, you can think of the design as being integrated into an item not placed on top, like screen printing, or sewn on to, like embroidery.
What Are the Advantages of Sublimation?
There is no limitation to the amount of design and colors that you can use, and it is all incorporated into the initial cost; you will not be hit with additional costs for adding a color or an additional logo to any garment. Colors are vibrant. You can use photographic images. The colors and designs will never crack, peel off, or fade. And the most beneficial advantage is that your garment design will never be discontinued as it is computer generated, so there is no fear of not being able to reorder or fill-in an item.
What Types of Items Can Be Sublimated?
Any garment, accessory, or promotional item that does not contain cotton can be sublimated. Almost all polyester and polyester blends can easily be sublimated. Most items begin the process as a white piece of fabric and then the sublimation process is done leaving the design on the exterior of the item and on the inside, you will still see the original white color of the fabric.
